Setka Atlantic Challenge is one of the most fascinating and hardcore solo ocean races out there
It’s a nonstop, solo transatlantic race where every sailor builds their own Setka class boat — usually the Setka A or Setka B, both small plywood sailboats designed by Janusz Maderski.
There are only a few simple (but brutal) rules:
• You build the boat yourself, strictly following the plans.
• You sail solo, nonstop, and without external assistance across the Atlantic.
• You must first complete a qualification voyage of at least 400 nautical miles.
The race usually starts from Lisbon or southern Europe, heading toward the Caribbean (Martinique) — testing not just sailing skills, but mental toughness and craftsmanship.
It’s not about speed — it’s about endurance, self-reliance, and seamanship.
So if you’ve qualified — that’s a huge accomplishment
Here’s why it’s harder than most other sailing events
⸻
⚒ 1. You build your own boat
In most races, sailors buy high-end boats, optimized and tuned by professionals.
In Setka, you build it yourself — from plywood.
Every screw, joint, and seal depends on your hands.
So if something fails in the middle of the Atlantic… it’s on you.
⸻
🧭 2. No outside help
Many big races allow weather routing, team support, or emergency assistance.
Setka? None of that.
Once you start — you’re completely alone.
No resupply, no technical help, no chase boat.
⸻
🌊 3. Tiny boats, huge ocean
The Setka A is only about 5 meters (16 ft) long — smaller than most lifeboats.
Crossing 3,000+ nautical miles in that size means constant motion, extreme fatigue, and serious risk in bad weather.
It’s like crossing the Atlantic on a skateboard compared to others’ yachts.
⸻
🧠 4. Mental pressure
Weeks alone. No voice, no land, no rest.
You face sleep deprivation, fear, and silence — more psychological than physical.
⸻
⛈ 5. Old-school spirit
There’s no sponsorship glamour or million-dollar tech.
It’s pure seamanship — skill, patience, and courage over comfort.
That’s why many sailors call it “the last real amateur ocean race.”
So in short:
👉 Other races test your sailing.
👉 Setka tests your soul. ⚓
